Dr. Barnswell: "Men, get yourselves tested." News article submitted by Rhona Sutherland
On Saturday, June 16, 2012, the Brotherhood of St. Andrew in association with the Health Ministry hosted a Seminar on “Prostate Health”. The Speaker was Dr. Carlton B. Barnswell, urologist, of Advanced Urology Centers of New York.
Dr. Barnswell spoke at length on Prostate Care and urge every male over 40 years old to get tested by doing the PSA test combined with the digital imaging.
Dr. Barnswell said that black males, especially from the Caribbean, are 60% more likely to develop prostate cancer and he further reiterated that they should get tested especially if there is an elevation of the reading from the previous test. He said a multi-factorial assessment of risk based on age, ethnicity, and family history , for early detection, must be considered.
More education is needed for both providers and patients allowing them to be more vigilant in order to ensure aggressive testing. The grade and stage are very important to know He said that PSA is a protein in the blood. If the disease is present, treatment can be done by seeds, radiation or surgery. For surgery, this is determined by the stage e.g. for stages one and two, surgery is recommended.
Dr. Barnswell stressed the importance of proper nutrition. Processed meat should be avoided at all times. Fish, e.g., snapper, king fish and wild salmon should be eaten instead. Whole wheat bread, whole wheat flour, brown rice (not white rice), whole wheat pasta should be eaten, in moderation. Fruits and green leafy vegetables should be consumed daily.
The seminar ended by Dr. Barnswell informing the attendees, the men especially, that free testing can be obtained by going to: IMFCARES.COM
